PROFINET Network
Jacobs Automation’s preferred network for PackTrak is PROFINET. It is an Ethernet-based networking solution for industrial automation. It allows distributed IO control from a PLC and supports application specific profiles in motion control.
PROFINET uses the same Ethernet found in the business world, but is enhanced to meet the rigid conditions found in industrial applications. More bandwidth is available for data-intensive functions such as machine vision, which can work in tandem with control functions if required. PROFINET is easily installed and engineering, network management and maintenance are based on common internet tools. The system can be updated at any time.
PROFINET can seamlessly operate and integrate into existing 3rd party networks while delivering many additional benefits. Operating as a proxy, it isn’t just a gateway, it is a two-part device in which one part acts as a master for the sub-network and the other as a ‘slave’ device on PROFINET. Data passes through the proxy in both directions with accurate functionality and mapping. IO for instance on the 3rd party network appears to be connected directly to the higher level network, making remote monitoring and management simple and fast.
PackTrak uses PROFINET IRT (Isochrone Real-Time) for motion control. IRT is the protocol that specifically reserves bandwidth on PROFINET and real-time synchronization of Ethernet switches by which a stable deterministic communication cycle is set. IRT is particularly suitable for demanding motion control applications, such as PackTrak and facilitates the use of PROFINET IO.
